NORTHWEST LIBRARY MURALS
POrtland, Oregon
Nia Musiba’s mural in the seating area at Northwest Library
As part of our continued partnership with Multnomah County Library, PSAA commissioned two stunning, expansive murals by local artists for the brand new Northwest Library.
KYler martz
The first of 3 sections of Bound for Slabtown
Bound for Slabtown is a 64 ft long mural that takes the viewer from day to night, starting with a crescent moon and ending with a beautiful Portland sunset. The room-spanning mural explores the transformative power of reading and nature through the migratory journey of the Vaux’s Swift.
Nia musiba
Artist Nia Musiba created this mural by drawing inspiration from Oregon’s natural landscape and its vibrant flora and fauna. The piece takes a colorful, abstract approach to depicting elements of the natural world, abstracted views of irises, ferns, Oregon swallowtails, Vaux’s swifts, oxalis, and more. It serves as a reminder to enjoy the beauty and balance of the environments that surround us.
TEEN WORKSHOP
As part of this project, local teens at a workshop led by artist Kyler Martz revealed that they craved tranquil and comforting spaces with a strong connection to nature. This helped inform Kyler’s approach to the mural, leading to his surreal design, transforming trees into books and books into birds.
A big thank you to the students and staff at Metropolitan Learning Center!
